D-O-H!!!!!
I am pleased to say I had the good fortune to meet Dan Castellaneta at the Catto Animation Gallery in Hampstead, North London where he was conducting an autograph session. For those of you who might have drawn a blank at the name, Dan lends his vocal talents to The Simpsons, providing the voices of both Homer Simpson and Krusty the Clown (amongst others) in the cartoon.
Anybody familiar with the Sky TV show will know that one of its more popular catchphrases is Homer's exasperated cry of "D-O-H!" whenever things fail to turnout quite as expected. Dan was producing a number of "D-O-H!"s on request during the session, and I took the opportunity of asking him whether the exclamation had been inspired by our very own James Finlayson. He smiled up at me, and said that l hit it right on the button!
He informed me that he and the producers of the show had been discussing ways to express Homer's feelings of angst toward the World around him. After a number of ineffective squeaks and grunts, Dan had suddenly remembered the familiar cry of the oft-troubled Fin from the boys' comedies, and decided that his incredulous "D-O-H!"s simply could not be bettered. Thus was Fin's modern-day equivalent born!
So - next time you watch The Simpsons, spare a thought for the fact that Homer Simpson. In his own way, is helping to carry Fin's baton!

James "Jimmy" Finlayson (born August 27, 1887 in Larbert, near Falkirk, Scotland; died October 9, 1953 in Los Angeles) was a Scottish-American actor who worked in both silent and sound comedies. He is most remembered for his work with Hal Roach Studios and Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, especially in the films Big Business (1929), and Way Out West (1937).
